The Story:

electronique was finally released in October of 2001 but the realization of this release had taken many years. After a decade of work on Any Questions? material, we were ready to look back at the earlier, non - Any Questions?, world of musical mayhem and sonic landscapes that we had created. Even though the earlier works were sometimes less produced, they captured a certain feeling that was important and allow the listener to hear the progression in the synthetic soundscapes they we've composed. In the case of the songs on electronique, these earlier works inspired the creation of newer structures and the final result is the first installment in the electronique series.

Reviews:

Outburn

The minimalist side project from electro mavericks, Any Questions?, Imbued Vagary is comprised of Ttam Troll (electronics and electronic percussion) and MC2P4 (electronics). Ideal for electronic purists, the music drifts through experimental spacescapes, dark synthpop flavors, sci-fi beats, and minimal melodies while staying clear of any organic sound. The EP consists of five tracks entitled "Electronique 1-5," two of which were recorded live at Der Palast des Goldes. Overall, Imbued Vagary's debut is an intriguing synthetic experience.

Gaze Into A Gloom

So, five very electronical tracks connected under one title. Quite an original. Listening to this disc, I had a kinda weird deja vu feeling. After suffering for a while, I got illuminated...

It's 1981. I've just purchased my first LP from local "record store". This is Latvian instrumental Rock group ZODIAC. Wow, I'm in heaven. What a cool technoid cover. From the other side of cover, let me steal few lines (I hope, that person, named A. Ermanbriks, doesn't mind it.) - "Both the name of the group and the music it plays rivet the attention and stimulate imagination. This is music that can enjoy in several different ways: whle listening alone immersed in fantasies: as music for dancing or, quite simply, as music resounding in the background. It's incessant rhythmic pulsation, captivating tone-colours and sound effects of electronic instruments, the unpretentious and plain melodic patterns create uncommon but comtemporary feeling, the effect being sometimes cosmically unreal and transient..."

I don't know what happened with members of ZODIAC. Maybe they've emigrated and now create under the name of IMBUED VAGARY? If you read the lines abroad there, I still have your first, very first album on a shelf of my relics.

Side-Line #39

This is the minimalist side-project of the founders of the American Industrial band Any Questions? and I like this much better than the cliche-plagued main project. 5 short instrumental tracks somewhere between electronic music box ditties, Atari game console sounds and Gary Numan robotics. Started in 1989 (and including two tracks recorded live in that year), the CD has a pronounced old-school feel. There is not one fresh sound on here, but it still works well, even apart from the nostalgic edge. It all sounds cheap and dated, yet somehow the cheesiness of it all is more endearing than appalling. Especially tracks 2 and 5 have a playful intensity and at the same time retro-futuristic quality I dig. I'd be interested to see to which places they are able to take this approach if they'd become just a tad more original.

Side-Line #38

The American IV is a side-project of the more familiar Any Questions? The music of their compose is a pure electronic experiment. They add body minded bass lines, but the rest sounds into bizarre explorations constructed with analog equipment. It's hard to define precisely what it's all about, but it never catches my attention. The last piece sounds like a washing machine during the spin-drying. Yeah, that's maybe cool and quite original, but the content is definitely too inconsistent to be relevant!
