Outburn
Punch Drunk creates an eccentric sound that somehow melds elements of industrial, new wave, punk,
metal, and a taste of digital hardcore to a very interesting end product. Their debut release,
Upload The Past...Download The Future, chronicles the band's work from 1992-1994. What sets Punch
Drunk apart is the obvious Devo influence that is evident throughout Upload The Past...Download The
Future. Frenetic electronics, breakneck rhythms, and robotic vocals flood the entire album and
sonically assault the listener, as heard on tracks such as the blistering "Karma Mechanics" or the
cyberpunk warbling of "Let's Simulate." The release's brightest offerings, however, are the ones
where Punch Drunk slow things down ever so slightly, as heard on the live rendition of "Daddy Says"
where the band is shown at their most cohesive as shouted vocals, booming synths, and spitfire beats
almost smother the audience. On "Transmutilator," Punch Drunk forcefully blends midtempo EBM with
crunching metal guitar riffs, and ear splitting synth squeals to cacophonous yet surprisingly
catchy results. And with the rest of the tracks clocking in at well under four minutes each, it's
quite difficult not to be intrigued by Punch Drunk's abrasive retro sound. Upload The Past...
Download The Future is a fun album of chaotic, sped-up electronics, and mind bending guitars that
ends up being both quirky and aggressive.

Side-Line
If you spawned Devo with William Gibson and injected a hefty dose of caffeine-amphetamine cocktails,
you'd come close to Punch Drunk. Incidentally, I am wearing my old Punch Drunk T-shirt while I am
writing this, so you could say I am a tad bit biased, but anybodyt who hears Punch Drunk cannot help
but become an enlisted member of the Hardtech Robocore army. The Philadelphia outfit formed in 1991
and disbanded in 1994. In between they released one CD EP and two tapes packaged in a super-8 box
and handing out official Punch Drunk toy paratroopers and punch guns while winning the title of Best
East Coast Industrial Band in 1993. This is a collection of remastered tracks, both previously
released and unreleased, proving once again how far ahead they were back in the grunge days when
people did not really flock to watching 5 guys in cyborg costumes playing loud electronic music in
a shroud of strobe lights and fog machines, especially on cheap toys beside the standard racket
making equipment of Moogs, Ensoniqs, and the likes. Their hyperventilating electro punk assault
pummels the senses and is just fun, even in 2002. Till says, support these loveable turbogeeks and
buy their album already.

"Upload The Past...Download The Future" is an album of tracks scavenged from the 1992 - 1994 era
of Philly hardtech-robocore band Punch Drunk. Punch Drunk is a punk-industrial crossover that is
at times reminiscent of Devo, Babyland, or Spit.
Frantic drums, clanks, sampling, and funky/ quirky electronics pepper each unique track. Stand out
tracks are the mechanically charged "Robotopia," the geek-metal of "Smartbomb," and the catchy dance
floor track "Product One."
Punch Drunk is going to grow on you because the band drops quality cuts like Space Invaders drops
bombs. If you are into old-school skateboard industrial or are just a geek in general, give "ULTP...
DLTF" a listen.

City Paper
The Philly-based band Punch Drunk dates back to industrial music's glory days - having commenced in
'91 and disbanded by '94. Upload is a collection of remastered robocore tunes recorded back in
1992-1994 (including a live track performed at Silk City). The 14 hard, aggressive, soul-blackening
electronic stormers grind like pre-rave techno madness and plunge deadly, distorted guitar-driven punk-
metal with Steve-O's outraged, wailing vocals. Punch Drunk was five guys raging with futuristic
instruments - using elelctronic percussion, sequencers, and computers - and delivering purely
synthetic, violently quirky and poisonouly loud sonic devastation. Their live shows always
incorporated laser lighting, fog machines and strobes to enhance the mechanical experience. Fans of
Chemlab, Lords of Acid and Godflesh will enjoy a toxic flashback into this hard-tech industrial of the
early '90s.

Chain D.L.K.
This is a collection of remastered tracks recorded during 1992-1994. Punch Drunk is a hardtech,
robocore, punk & new wave electronic band that'll put you in the mind of DEVO. They have the
tendency to make you dance along with their aggressive and loud gidgets, gadgets, and technology
with throbbing electro-beats. "Upload The Past...Download The Future" is one weird electronic
experimentation album that will have you fall in the band's futuristic crazy world.

I'm not all that familiar with Punch Drunk as this is the first release I've ever heard by them. I
stumble across Upload The Past...Download The Future by accident and being somewhat familiar with
Floating Fish Studios picked it up. It seems that this album is a re-release of early 90's
material and it is evident of that time period when you listen to it. It is an entirely machine-
driven album as no sounds are produced with conventional instruments which was indicative of the late
80's and early 90's industrial music. The band could be best described as Devo on a very high dose
of speed. Inside the liner notes proclaim Punch Drunk to be "Socially malfunctioning turbogeeks
with attitude" and I feel that this is a perfect assessment of the band. Do I like the album? Sure!
Where would industrial music be today without bands like Punch Drunk who, although far from
pioneers of the sound, have helped the scene on it's journey to where it is today.

Gaze Into A Gloom
Band was formed in late 1991 in South Philly and this album is a collection of their remastered
tracks, recorded during 92-94. This is a straight dance compilation with tight rhythm sections and
clear synthetic sounds. It's danceable oriented electro hacking industrial trash they vomit right
into your petrified face, with such an extreme delight, of course...
Once again, the singer's great expressive and virulent vocal definitely lead the album. Harsh,
restrained and still quite catchy enough, wouwh!
